I’m going to tell you something about yourself you probably didn’t know. You’re going to discover the real reason you come to RockPit.
Well, at least from what I’ve observed.
Once you learn this, I think you’ll enjoy your time here much more because of how aware of the reason you’re spending time here.
Since I was a kid, I’ve always wanted to help people. You probably did too. It’s in our nature to be helpful.
I spent my teens years watching ER and dreaming of being a Doctor. I dreamt of saving lives and being the hero in people’s lives. I had friends that wanted to be firefighters or police officers (some did too), but we all dreamed of saving the day.
(How I envisioned my adult life)
For me though, my dream changed as soon as I hit college. I realized I didn’t want to be in school for 8 more years. I just didn’t enjoy the classroom anymore. I love learning and still do a lot of it every day, but traditional college wasn’t for me.
So, I took an alternative path by attending a technical school to learn software development. And I do help people with the software I write. It’s not exactly how I envisioned helping people because it’s sort of indirect.
It’s not ME personally helping them in their life. So the desire to help was still slightly missing…
Before we opened RockPit, I had no clue how much we could help people on a personal level. I always thought that people could use RockPit as an escape.
An escape from the office.
An escape from the house.
An escape from the daily routine.
An escape from… reality?
I gave this a lot of thought. And I really started to believe that people were using RockPit as some sort of escape.
I even created a spec for a commercial based around this idea. Something about “escaping the routine”.
That all changed by listening to a single statement made by singer JJ Grey. The idea I had of “escaping” came to a screeching halt.
You’re gonna want to watch from 1:09 to 3:00
If you don’t want to watch it, JJ Grey talked about Lochloosa being his place to go get away from everything. He’ll get on his boat, head out onto the lake and just watch the world go by. Maybe fish. Maybe enjoy a beverage.
One of his friends told him “You just go there to escape reality!”
JJ said “I thought about for a minute and was like… well… maybe I do go there to escape reality… But then I thought a little longer and I was like no… Hoss… you got it backward. I go there to get TO reality.”
Wow.
Get TO reality.
I mean that statement stopped me in my tracks.
It immediately made me reevaluate everything I thought about why you spend time at RockPit. Over the past few weeks, I’ve been observing you a little more closely (in a non-creepy way) when you visit RockPit.
(A re-creation of me watching you)
And I’ve noticed some commonalities.
First off, I haven’t seen anyone trying to escape anything. Far from it.
Instead, I’ve seen you hanging with family and friends. Your kids. Your parents. Your siblings.
You smile a lot.
You laugh a lot.
You hold hands.
You hug each other.
You eat good food.
You enjoy our beer. You consume LOTS of it. Collectively, that is.
You reluctantly leave but wish you had more time to spend with your friends and family.
What it boils down to it this: You’re not escaping anything at RockPIt… What you’re doing is getting to your most desired reality.
In other words, you’re the best YOU while you’re here.
The you, if given the choice, you’d want to be all time.
Relaxed. Happy. Joyful. Fulfilled.
Maybe you’re just one of those four states. Maybe you’re all. Maybe it’s some other desirable state you’re in.
Either way, the realization that you’re spending precious time with family and friends here, enjoying life a little more and being more relaxed, happy, joyful and fulfilled, it’s made my childhood dream of helping people a reality.
I would have never guessed that it would have come from opening up a brewery.
We might not be saving your life at RockPit, but we’re helping you enjoy life a little bit better.
And to us here at RockPit, that’s more than enough.
