I heard the first few notes, and my ears perked up.
I’ve heard the song hundreds of times and immediately recognized it. You would, too.
When she sang the first few words, “There is a house in New Orleans. They call the Rising Sun.”, I was like…
(This girl can sang!)
I walked over to the other side of the bar and watched in awe as she sang in perfect pitch.
When she was done, everyone cheered profusely.
Throughout the night, she nailed several more songs, including “Nothing Compares 2 U.”
Which is an incredibly hard song to sing. Even if you’re singing in the car by yourself.
(Me in the car. Probably you too)
I later found out her name is Emily Piriz. She was a finalist on Season 13 of American Idol.
We’ll be seeing her again.
But she wasn’t the only one who showed up last week. Throughout the night, local musicians swung by and jammed together.
Gypsy Elise threw down a few songs like Sittin’ on the Dock of the Bay.
Henry Hood showed up again with a crazy good rendition of Rocket Man.
Christopher Edwards sang several songs that blew us away like Tiny Dancer.
All because they love music and want to jam with others that love music.
That’s what makes Tuesday night Jam Sessions at RockPit incredibly unique.
These musicians show up at RockPit to play music, drink beer, and have a good time together.
There are no practice sessions together beforehand. There’s no setlist—just pure musical talent.
What’s pretty freaking amazing is some of them are playing together for the first time.
You’d never know it though. They show up and play together like they’ve been playing together for years.
It usually gets going around 7 PM and ends whenever the hell the musicians are done. Last week that was about 11 PM.
If you haven’t been to a jam session yet, tonight (if you’re reading this on a Tuesday) is as good as any to give it a whirl.
I’m warning you though… If you get sucked into the jam session, it’s hard to leave.
Because you never know who will show up and drop your jaw.
Cheers and see you at RockPit,
Chris “legendary car singer” Rock
P.S. If you’re a musician who wants to come out and jam, you’re always welcome to swing by and show everyone what you got.
